A little while ago, I was featured in my Alumni magazine and I totally forgot to share it with you guys. I always get a lot of questions about what I studied in school, how I got my foot in the door and what I do for MLB. I thought this article summed it up pretty well, or enough to share it at least. Anyone looking to get into baseball as a career should always start at the Winter Meetings. networking and going to the job fair can open a lot of doors!

----
From keeping up with old friends to browsing the day’s news, many of us rely on social media to keep connected. That connectivity means different things to different people. To Krista Robertson ’13 CI, it means a career, as she is a social media coordinator for Major League Baseball (MLB) in New York, N.Y.

Robertson and her family have always shared a passion for baseball, but she never dreamed she could make a living from it. “I’ve always loved sports, but I always felt like baseball was kind of a boys’ game,” she says.

She also found herself to be a fan of social media, but as she was exposed to the likes of Myspace and Facebook as they became popular, she didn’t imagine there would be career opportunities that could come from being social media savvy.

“My mom would always tell me in high school when I was on Facebook a lot, ‘You’re not going to work on Facebook when you’re older!’ It’s so crazy to see how times have changed,” she says.

Robertson decided to attend the University of Kentucky and major in communications. Wanting to create an online presence, she created Southern Shopaholic, a blog inspired by her love of fashion. To her surprise, it was a big hit right off the bat.

In December of her senior year, growing increasingly uneasy about not having any job prospects, Robertson joined a friend who was job-seeking at the MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn. A family friend had a few connections in California, so he set her up to meet with an assistant general manager of the San Francisco Giants, who told her MLB was looking to expand its social media presence.

After the meeting, Robertson searched the Internet and located the social media director of MLB. She sent him an email and the two met later that night. Her go-getter attitude must have made a good impression. “He told me if you’re willing to move to New York after graduation, the job is yours,” she says.

After discussion with friends and family, Robertson decided this was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. To gain experience in the business of baseball, she took an internship with the Lexington Legends her last semester as she anticipated the possibilities that lay ahead.

When spring came, Robertson gave an official interview and was offered a job starting June 1, less than a month after graduation. Today, she finds herself on a team managing social media for many baseball clubs and has gained even more responsibility in recent months. “Now I’m here and I love it, and I never would’ve expected any of it,” she says.

It seems Robertson came on to the social media scene at just the right time. Four years ago, her job didn’t even exist. Social media is increasingly more important in a technology-driven society, she explains.“If I have a problem with a brand, I’ll tweet at them, and I feel like my voice is being heard because they tweet me back,” Robertson says.

It’s that instant connectivity that makes social media so appealing to brands and consumers alike.“If you feel like you connect with the brand, you’re going to want to start supporting them and buying their products,” she says.

Since moving to the big city, Robertson hasn’t forgotten her roots. She maintains her blog, though she admits she’s had to rebrand it. “I am no longer in the south, and I’m not as big of a shopaholic since New York is so expensive,” she laughs.

Robertson came up with the idea for Covering the Bases, a fashion blog that also teaches women a little about baseball. “My idea is that hopefully my readers will dress really cute to go to a game with their boyfriend, and they know what the (baseball) references are,” she says.

Robertson owes a lot to her blog, as she notes it’s a big part of what landed her job, and says she plans to continue it as long as she’s having fun. But for now, her focus is on the majors. “I’m having so much fun in baseball that I can’t ever see myself leaving,” she says.

Robertson has a few words of advice for other young alums on how they can hit their own homeruns. “You just have to take that extra step and take a chance,” she says. “Don’t be scared. You’re talking about your dream, and nothing should scare you away from it.”

Please excuse the overload of pictures today, I just really love these photos that Alexander and I shot in Soho last weekend. I have to admit that this is my first leather jacket (eee!) and it's pretty awesome. Besides the perfect nutmeg color, it's really soft. Maybe all leather is? Who knows (not me). I have to thank my wonderful friends at J. McLaughlin for sending it over!

Before brunch on Sunday (see embarrassing photo here) I was able to enjoy the beautiful New York City day and break in my new wedge booties. We all know I love a good wedge bootie (remember this post?) and these are being added to the rotation. Who knew I'd be so in love with the pointy toe? I do have to admit I'm having a hard time finding the right socks to wear with these. I mean I know right now it's cool to go no-show, but what about winter? My ankles won't enjoy being frozen. Any ideas? I was thinking of going the funky route and getting some crazy socks (who says the boys have to have all the fun?).

I was also sporting some pretty good accessories Sunday too. First off, I'm in awe of my new bow tie necklace. Helllooooo fun new twist on a classic look! Of course I had to pair it with my white oxford… #duh. Second, I'm showing off my new (ballaaaaa) watch! Can I get a woot woot? I got it because it so closely resembled this Cartier one that I can only get in my wildest dreams. But hey, mine's cooler because it has a blue face. Sooo boom.

Happy Halloween!

If you don't love a good cable knit sweater, you cray cray. I've been seeing 525 America more and more lately and I'm really starting to fall in love! They look oh-so comfortable and from what I've heard, they are.

Should I take the plunge? This sweater is my top choice and this one is a close second. There's just something about turtlenecks that really get to me! I've been on the hunt for good cable knits and I think these are the ones. Don't you agree?

What's black and white and read all over?! This blog post!! Gahh, gets me every time haha.

Some days you just have to step away from color and deck yourself out in black (and gold). It's World Series Game 7 (as I'm writing this) so we're going to keep it short and sweet today. This dress is one of my new purchases and I always love a good shift dress from The Factory (which always has great sales -- like the one going on now!). Of course I had to pair this dress with my new watch from Rakani. I've been shopping around for a black watch (almost bought this one) for some time and I'm so happy to have stumbled onto this one! I wore this look the other day to work and then around SoHo for some wallet-damaging shopping! But you'll see more of that next week :)

Happy Thursday!

All right, all right, let's talk about this people! LiketoKnow. It: Some of you know about it; others might not. Either way I'm here to teach, talk and explain all there is to know about the app. Even if you hate it, just listen along. I might change your perception. I also might not, so who knows.

Teach:
So what is it? LiketoKnow.it (or LTK as I call it) is a way for people to shop on Instagram. It's available through my blog affiliate network (how I make money through the blog) and it's that weird little URL code you see people put in the caption of Instagram photos.

After you sign up for LTK it can go one of two ways:

1. (the normal way) you "like" the photo and an email gets sent to you with product links to shop the photo
2. (the Krista way) you "like" the photo (whether you want to shop it or not because you're a nice person and you should support those you follow) and if you're interested in a product, type the URL into your browser and shop from there.

Talk:
The No. 1 complaint about LTK is saying "I don't need another daily email." Well duh! No one wants any more emails, but you know you'll get more one way or another. It's not hard to delete. Trust me, I do it all the time haha. And if that's the case, you can set up your account to get an email anywhere from ASAP to daily to weekly. OR you can also unsubscribe from emails altogether and still use the LTK URL. Easy peasy!

Explain:
So why do I use it? Like a lot of bloggers on Instagram, we have followers who don't actually read the blog but instead just follow along with daily snaps. My first use for LTK is for them. This gives them an opportunity to shop my blog without actually reading my blog.

The second reason is to let my followers shop outfits that will probably never make it to the blog (like my daily outfit arm party snaps).

And the third reason I use it is to make money (and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you). My Instagram is basically a second blog, and my blog is a part-time job (full-time job here). If I have a chance to make money, like any good businesswoman would, I'm going to take it (this is me being honest and transparent with you all).

Teach Pt. 2:
If that last paragraph is coming as a shock to you, let me explain. 98% of bloggers are connected with an affiliate network which is how bloggers make money. This can be done in one of two ways, either by PPC (pay per click which is about $.01 per click) or through commission of sale (which means if you click the link and buy something the blogger will make a commission on your sale. Commission varies with different retailers).

LTK is part of an affiliate network (a commission based one) and so when you shop an LTK photo and buy something the blogger receives a commission. Make sense? (If not, email me I can explain more!) Here's a video if you want to learn more!

Soooo what do you think? I'd love to hear genuine comments and thoughts below!

Day to Night Outfits
H&M Wool Coat $99 c/o // Buckley K Peplum Top c/o // Leather Panel Leggings (old) similar here $68 // Black Heels $29 // J. Crew Belt $30 // Daniel Wellington Watch $229 c/o // BaubleBar Coordinates Cuff c/o $38 // BaubleBar earrings $28

Where do I begin with this outfit? I love it! It's perfect for this fall we're having because it's cold in the morning and then gets warm. What the heck? I just got this Buckley K peplum top recently, and I've worn it about three times since. They designed their shirts for the purpose of being versatile while traveling. I mean, traveling to work and back counts, right?

This shirt is just so dang comfortable I want to wear it all the time. It's also perfect for everything. This is more of a day-to-night outfit, but I also wore this top with jeans and with a skirt and it still looks awesome. I love the length of the shirt. I don't know why, but I think it has something to do with me not worrying about people seeing my undies when I sit sit down and that it flatters my body type. The higher waist is also perrrrfect for me! Gah, can you tell I love this shirt?

I'm also sporting my leather leggings that I mentioned in this post yesterday. Shop more looks there or down below to find your own pair!

On Saturday, Andrew and I went on a hike to Popolopen Gorge. I have a fall to-do list and hiking to see fall foliage was No. 1, so I'm glad we were able to do it before it got too late. I used to hike all the time with my friends in college at the Red River Gorge but ever since I moved to NYC, I never had the chance. I mean, Andrew and I have been trying to hike for a year now.

We had a great time and a great hike! The view at the top was amazing. The gorge was close to West Point, which was cool because off in the distance you could see the school. There was also a little memorial called the Popolopen Torne. Hikers can bring their own rock from the bottom of the mountain to the top and add to it.

As eager as you all are to hear more about my hike, I'll switch gears and talk about my outfit starting with the boots. A good hiking boot, along with being comfortable, consists of two things: good ankle support and a good tread. With that, you're ready for your hike!

It was also a little chilly out so I made sure to wear layers. A simple v-neck with a flannel over it was perfect (and stylish) for the hike. And of course, you want comfortable pants! Nothing that can rip and that are breathable. My go-to are always my yoga pants :)
